Day trip to Charyn Canyon

Highlights: Stunning panoramic views of the Canyon, hiking down through the impressive valley, swim in and picnic besides the canyon’s river.

Season: all year round

Duration: 10 hours

For those willing to delve deeper into the land, Charyn Canyon offers a remarkable break from the plains east of Almaty. Having been described as equally impressive as Arizona’s Grand Canyon the 300-metre deep rift has been carved out over millennia by the Charyn river. Standing on the canyon’s edge  wondrous views of its varying colours and formations are evident down below, while looking up to the horizon reveals the formidable ridges of the Tien-Shen Mountain range.

Descending into the canyon on a dirt road engulfs you in Charyn’s brilliant red-standstoned cliffs which funnel you into the heart of the Valley of Castles and Witch Gorge. Wildlife lovers’ appetites will be satisfied as the Canyon’s architect, the Charyn river, supports more than  1500 species of plants (17 on Kazakhstan’s endangered Red List), 103 species of birds,  62 different types of mammals, and 25 kinds of reptiles. For those looking for a refreshing swim the river can even accommodate humans! Those looking to stay high and dry can enjoy pleasant picnics on the river’s banks.

Charyn offers a truly unique and magical escape from nearby Almaty.
